Typhoid fever is commencing its ravages amongst us. Constable Donovan, who. has been for some time stationed at Ngapara, was yesterday admitted into the Oamaru Hospital, and politely requested to occupy the bed in which Constable Cuthbert died, which he very properly, but also politely, refused •to do. 'By the way, is it true that Constable Cathbert died in the main building, amongst ordinary patients, and that- those in ' charge ware going to repeat so-gross a mistake in'the. case, of Constable Donovan? This is a matter, amongst others, into which a special meeting of the Hospital Committee, called for to-morrow, will have to- enquire. It will never do -to allow ..such . laxity when so much is at stake. It is to be deplored that typhoid fever has made its appearance in this community;- - but it is no use " crying over spilt milk." It is very much more sensible to use every endeavor to stamp it out. We thought that the Hospital would have been the first to set an example of carefulness, and we hope that we have not been mistaken. Mails for Australia, per Arawata, will close at the Bluff at 4 p.m. on the 10th inst. Messrs. Connell and Clowes' report the sale to-day, at M'Kay's yards, of 1700 crossbred ewes at 7s 1 id each. To-morrow evening a tea-meeting, concert, and dance will bo given at Duntroon, in aid of the funds of the local school. A very good programme will, we believe, be presented, and everything possible has been done to ensure the whole affair passing off with the utmost success. We therefore feel certain that a bumper house and a large balance in aid of the school funds will be the result.

The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Horticultural Society was held at Mr Karlc's rooms, last evening, when there were present—Messrs. Connell (in the chair), Montagu, Simpson, Glen, Earle, Hartley, Kidd, and Spratt (Hon. Secretary). Votes of thanks were accorded to the judges for the sen-ices rendered by them at the recent show, and to Mr. H. Aitken for the use of the timber necessary for staging at the show. A number of accounts were passed for payment, and the prizes won at the last show were ordered to be paid over. The Secretary wa3 instructed to reply to a letter from Mr Paterson, that the Society could not take cognisance of the matter referred to. Though not so large as on previous occasions, the attendance at Mr. and Mrs. Hart's entertainment last evening was very good. A change of programme was presented, and the audience appeared to thoroughly enjoy the entertainment. We have not space to comment upon the many new features in the performance, but we must make special mention of Mrs. Hart's dancing of the Highland fling, which met with the most enthusiastic encore that we have heard for some time. This evening an almost entirely new programme will be presented, and as it is the last performance this clever little company will give here, we would strongly advise all w'ro have not previously seen them to take this opportunity of witnessing Mr. and Mrs. Hart's pleasant entertainment. The monthly meeting of the North Otago Benevolent Society's Committee was held at tiie .Secretary's office last evening, when there were present —Messrs. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and continued, Mr. X. Fleming, in accordance witli notice given, moved, "That the resolution iv.i.-ing tiic salary of the Secretary be rescinded.'' The motion was seconded by Mr. Allen. Some discussion took place, during which Messrs. Greenfield and Konayne supported the motion, and Messrs. Kerr, Gibbs, and M'Farlane opposed it. On the question licint: put, five voted for, and five against the motion. Tile chairman gave his casting v>tc in favor of the motion, which was therefore carried. A letter was read from Mr. T. \V. Parker in reference to the case of Levi Ward, at Hampden. The Secretary's letter on the subject to Mr. Murcott was approved ; but, on the motion of Mr. X. Fleming, it was resolved, " That the Society decline to render any assistance." The Visiting Committee's report was read and | adopted, and, on the motion of Mr. Greenfield. Messrs. Gibbs, Mollison, M'Farlane, and the mover were appointed a committee ! to report at a special meeting to be held in ; a fortnight, on the mode of administering relief.
