Wisltyan minister, was i;iven a largely-attended farewell soiree last night. An enormous number of claims io vote have been sent in this year, partly owing t'-» annoyance felt through some town clerks and road board clerks transmitting informal lists last time, which were thrown out.
TIMARU. March 26. The man who was severely scalded at the Meat Preserving Works yesterday still lives, but is in a precarious condition. The five members of the Geraldine County Council who remained after the other two had resigned, resolved yesterday, by three to two, to bring the Act into force. The whole proceedings were a discredit to. the County, and a large majority of the electors are disgusted and enraged at the result. The Attorney General's opinion has been asked as to whether the fact of two members resigning constitutes three a majority of the whole Council, as required by the Act. The first three blocks of the Harbor works were laid to-day by the crane, which i 3 working excellently. ROSS. Marcli 26. Mr Gisbonic addressed a crowded meeting of his constituents last night. He said he would support any Government which would bring forward measures having for their object the readjustment «>f taxation, extension of the franchise, and the improvement of the local selfjtovewiment. An unanimous vote of confidence was passed. PALMERSTON NORTH. March 20. Last night, the Palmerston Saw-mill, owned by Messrs. Richter, Nansted, and Co., was discovered to be on fire. The flames spread so quickly that in two minutes the whole buildings and stacks of timber were one sheet of flame. As there was not the least hope of saving anything in the sawmill, efforts were directed to remove the boards and scantlings along the ground leading to the flour-mill belonging to the same proprietors, which were happily successful, as the fire was confined on the premises. The owners were just fixing in a new engine, and setting a new boiler, which cost L6OO, and were to be started going in a few days. No idea can be gleaned as to how the fire originated. The pmperty was only left a short while previously all safe. The plant is insured for L'JOUO—LBOO in the South British, about LIOOO in the North British, and the balance in the New Zealand office, but that amount only half covers the loss, a, the mill was one" of the finest in the district and had an unusually large stock i ..f valuable timber. I'p to a week ago it was insured for L 2200, but the extra L2OO i wns allowed to lapse in order to make even money. As might be expected, the flames lit up the country for miles round, and continued with unabated vigor through tin: whole night. Tiiere are souw hundreds of tons of sawdust now on fire, | which will take a week to extinguish. The affair has caused deep regret, for, indoI pemieiiMy of tile loss to the proprietor.-. who are" hL'hly respected, it throws a large number of men out of employment | for months, it is rather singular that the reporter of the Maiiawaiu Times visited tin; mill during the day. ami gave a long description of the works, with its new and improved machinery, but it was crowded | out of last night's issue when an alarm of i tire was given.
