CRICKET.

o THE ENGLISH GENTLEMEN IN CHRISTCHURCH. Christchubch, March 22. The match between several of the English cricketers, aided by Christchurch players, and an eleven of Canterbury was played this afternoon. The day was splendid for cricket, and Mr. Hornby stated that a better light could not be desired. Ifc was infinitely better than on the other side. The spectators in the course of the afternoon numbered perhaps 2000 or 3000. Lord Harris won the toss and at a quarter past 12 a start was made. Ashby proved to be in fine form, but unfortunately the other bowlers except Beard were not; and Neilson kept Lee on much too long. Hornby played a dashing inningsj and showed decisively how the Long hops Lee and Frith sent down should be treated. The other men succumbed rapidly to Ashby, and with the score at 108, Beard succeeded in clean bowling the Lancashire champion after he had made 66, including eight fours. Thirteen runs were made off the last over he had bowled. Mr. Hornby was loudly ' cheered. Eight wickets were now down ! for 108, which had only taken 85 minutes to get. But E. Cotterill and Longden refused to be separated. Five bowiers were tried before Cotterill was induced to go, and then Fuller stuck, making single after single. These last three men put in 70 runs in 50 minutes, and played really well. The fielding was very indifferent, overthrows being frequent. It was not supposed that the Canterbury eleven would have much trouble in drawing the match, as only two and a half hours were left to finish the game in, but they made such a feeble display against the second rate bowling that they were all out by twenty minutes to 0. Corfe and Neilson made a good stand, and the former, who went in first, eventually carried his bat through, but his innings was a very lucky one, and not made in good form. Secretan was unluckily run out, when playing well, but generally speaking the batting was feeble in the extreme. Schultz bowled fast, and at times threw. Hornby bowled slow, left-handed, with seven men on the off side, and no long-leg or mid-on ; but there was nothing in his bowling, and, under ordinary circumstances, he would be slated right and left. Lord Harris' bowling was mild stuff. He was no-balled twice—Corfe being caught off one of them—and expostulated loudly with the umpire. The Englishmen, during the day, visited the Museum, and leave this evening.for Wellington. - a-tic .c-:n„,„;, lcr the" score ami analysis : COMBINED TEAM. A. N. Hornby, b Beard 60 G.
