ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE OAMARU MAIL. Sir, —I hope that you will allow me to draw the attention of those responsible and the public to the carelessness with which people's property is treated by the railway authorities. During the past fortnight I have lost fully Ll2 through the detention by the department of shipments of fruit between Dunedin and here. The Oamaru and Dunedin Steam Navigation Company shall have my carrying in future, and I will be content to wait the Waitaki's time. Here are a few particulars that will show how I have been treated :—Fityeight cases of fruit arrived at the Dunedin station on the afternoon of the 26th February. It was immediately booked by railway, and reached Oamaru at 7 a.m. on the Ist March, with the exception of two kegs of grapes, which arrived here on the 4th, and were allowed by me to remain at the station for the deled ation of the railway people. In another case, 51 cases of fruit, ex Arawata, arrived at the Dunedin station at 11 a.m. on the 7th. They left Dunedin at 10 a.m. on the Bth, and seventeen cases reached Oamaru at 12.30 a.m. on the 9th (Sunday). The remainder came to hand at 12.30 a.m. on the 11th ; and people growl, at what 1 the high price of fruit. —I am, &c., G. W. Draper.
