It is rumored that the Government propose to- give the wnsold portion of the reclaimed land as an endowment for the Harbor Board, on condition that the Bt>ard reclaims additional land, and constructs a lafge graving dock for the ocean steamers. It is said that a Biß to do this will be introduced next session. A commencement will be made next week with the West Coast Railway, start- \ ing from Kaiwarra through Porirua. The Government have sent Home for engines and carriages similar to those used at the ; Lower Hatt. . ; The concert in aid of the Kattangata 'Fund to-night is crowded. There are nearly 100 performers. Th« total loss is estimated at t»UNBOIN. March 4. An accident of a somewhat serious I nature, and one calling for searching in-1 :nuiry, occttrred on the Ctutha Railway I this afternoon. As the goods train, which leaves Wingatoi about noon, appifoaches Green Island, the engine-driver noticed two. cattle trucks projecting from the ■siding at Calvertey's sand pit,and extend- : ing across the main tine. Every endeavor ! was made to stop the train before reachling this point, but owing to the incline land the wet state of the rails, its progress i could not be arrested in time, and it ran 'with considerable force into the trucks. These were Upset and smashed, and the ! engine of the goods train was also considerably damaged, the buffer being forced in, and the back framework altogether knocked about. The driver and stoker ! rniraeukrosty escaped injury, bat the guard I was thrown off the brake, and was a good deal cut about the face. The railway (authorities state that no blame can possibly be assigned to any of their officers, land they attribute the dangerous position I of the trucks to Calverlcy, or the people : in his employ. When the state of the poll for the Auckland City West election was made known about five o'clock, it was found that 1037 electors had recorded their votes, of an actual total of about 1500. The state of the poll was D. Goldie, 770; .J. Dignan, 2Gl—leaving Goldie a winner by a majority of 515. This was the signal for great rejoicing.
