Before J. W. Humphrey, Esq... J. P.. Kobttrt Thompson and William Loader, charged with having been drunk and disorderly at Duntroon yesterday, were each lined -Os. VVe again remind our readers that the service of song entitled " Bunyans Koty War " takes plaee at WesteyChurch this evening, at half-past seven o'clock, in aid of the Kaitangata Belief Fund. We hope to sen a large attendance. We would remind those interested that tho Assessment Court for the Waitaki district will be held at the schoolhouse, Pttfceuri, at 10 a,m. to-morrow. A mooting of th« Qnmam shareholders of tho Commercial Building Society was held last night in the Mechanics-' Institute. There was a fair attendance. Eleven per cent, bonus was declared for East year. The average receipts of this Society are shown to bo at L 450 per month, while the amount lent in loans during the past five years is LMti.OOOi Tho amount now standing to dubit of bonuses is LTS.OOOi There is fjVj.OOO to tho credit of shareholders,, and L2&00O to the credit of depositors. lairing the nine years that the Society has been m uxistenco it has never experienced such * demand for money as has been made upon it ♦luring the post six months. It is now offering » per cent for money at she month* calls. Tlio local director* for the present year are Messrs. Kennedy, Hurst, wad Mainland. As our readers are already aware. Mr. John iChurciv is local agent for th« Society. Tim performing member* of the Philharmonic Hoeisty will meet for rehearsal at the Volitate*** flail this evening, at 9 o'clock, when the music proposed to be performed at tho ceiuiert to be given next Monday for the Kaitangata Raliat fund will be gone through. Ai'vanuements »r» proceeding for the (Irand National Steeplechase Club's next meeting, which is to be held on the 2<tt& May. at Awamoav Mr. Egnn (the Secretary). accompanied by two local members of the Club, visited the proposed course yesterday, and were greatly pleased with it. They are of opinion that it is on* of the finest courses in the Colony, and that the t'lul) are greatly indebted to the Hon; JVf. Holmes for his kindness in placing it at their disposal for the occasion. The railway lino passes within 130 yards of an elevated position, from which a clear view of the whole of the course and the surrounding uonntry can be seen, and which would therefore answer admirably as a natural grand stand. Alt that will be required to moke the affair both eminently successful and enjoyable will be fine weather. That the North Otago Coursing Club's programme for the approaching season is the most excellent that has been issued in this Colony, cannot be denied; A glance at it will produce a conviction that it has been compded with exceeding care, and that the 4'litb hn» resolved that the good fame it has earned in tile past, through* th« admirable conduct of its affairs, shall be increased as it becoTnesmore firmly sstabtishedand in proportion to its vigor. Although only in existence two seasons, its munagemwnt hue been so judicious that it, almost from the beginning, become of colonial importance. It can boast that its members list includes the names of intluentiat tovers of sport and other men resident in almost every part of this island. The effect of the Club'* operations has been to create a desire to- improve the quality of dogs, anil we are pleased uhs*rv«. to effect this end, the occasional tueution of the importation of really firstuhiss animals, suitable for the coursrog field. Of course tho sporting men of this district have no cause to be ashamed of the: dogs that have figured at the matches of the Club. They undoubtedly possess some "grit." But to cease to attempt improvement i» to deteriorate. The Club evidently hitends to do its best to create on interest in the importation and breeding of dogs for the coursing field, The matches of the season will be a* follow : - On April 22 and followdays— Ladies' Bracelet, for 32 dogs (all ages), the Ikuut Jiii* property of member* of tliH Club, at L& natsh t ladies to nominate.
