The distress in the Old Country is keener now than it has been for the last 30 years. Ten thousand workpeople have been deprived of the means of support through the closing of gigantic manufactories. Not only have operatives been thrown out of employment—property has become sadly and rapidly depreciated in value. All this is more or less the outcome of foreign competition. This is the evil that every country should guard against. Let the people of New Zealand take warning. Let them study their own interests and avert such crises by encouraging local industries. We can make our own woollen goods, iron, boots and shoes, &o. For the first purpose factories are ak-eady in existence ; as regards the second, numerous vigorous attempts have been made to transform the Taranaki iron sand into a marketable commodity; although a method of properly doing this may not be discovered for many years, that iron will before long be manufactured in the . Colony we have no doubt. To us, as a district, the third industry is of more direct interest. We have no longer any ifecessity to send out of the district for boots and. shoes. Messrs. Houghton and Pockunq? ton manufacture them here as well and as cheaply as they can be d.one in any part of the world. Protect yQur own interests by seeing that you buy boots and shoes njade by Roughton- and Pocklington of the New Zealand Boot Factory, Thames-street, — [Advt.
