Mr. I?)»uuld's benefit last evening was largely attended. CUKISTCHURCH. February 14. The Hon. E. Richardson waited on Mr. Macandrcw to-day, relative to new lunatic asylum building. The tenders sent in were in excess of the amount voted, and new tenders have to be called for it. Mr. Richardson pointed out that such work as could be clone out of the moriqy voted ought to be gone on with, and the Minister consented. During the past fortnight twelve cases of typhoid fever, one of diphtheria, and one of scarlet fever have occurred. Liddy, in deference to the request of the Church of England clergymen, has withdrawn his advertised jubilee entertainment oil Sunday by thj Fvido Tom's Cabin Company. His action is much approved, AUCKLAND. February 15. The infant son of Mr. George Munro (Wairoa .South) has been accidentally burnt to death. The Rev. Mr. Mulgan (Kati-Kati) has been appointed a commissioner of higher education in the place of Mr. J. A. Tole, M.H.R. There arc several destructive bush fires in the northern districts, houses, haystacks, and fencing being burnt, principally through the carelessness of those in charge of the trains. Detective Farrell relieves Detective Brennan at the Thames. The latter conies to Auckland. NAPIER. February 14. Mr. M. E . Miller reports the sale of Mr. Massey Hutchinson's Whangarei and Waipono Estate, consisting of 410 acres freehold and 512 acres leasehold, with 2200 sheep and plant, to Mr. Gavin Peacock, for LSOOO. A meeting of merchants and others interested in the welfare of Napier was held at the Masonic Hall to-day for the purpose of arranging preliminaries for the formation of a company to carry out the breakwater scheme at Port Ahuriri Bluff. It was decided to collect all the information procurable and draw up a prospectus, to be laid before the public as speedily as possible. TIMARU. February 14. At a meecing of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, the letters forwarded to the Undei iv/iters' Association in London, regarding the nature of Timaru and Oaniaru ports, were brought before the attention of the members by Mr. Granger, local lpanoger of the National Mprtgage arid Agency Company, on whose mo.tion a resolution was carried that a statement showing the number of vessels lost during the last teji years, with toning and other particulars, should hg prepared, for transmission to the New Zealand and Sydney Underwriters' Association, and to Lloyds. The mover said such information would astonish the Associations, as it would give them an idea of the class of vessels lost, and the strength of their cables.
Over seventy concrete blocks are ready to be laid by the steam crane for the harbor works. The shingle is collecting at a wonderful rate at the south side of the Breakwater. Already the Harbor Board can say that two acres of land, worth fully L 15,000, has been reclaimed for them by the action of the sea.
GISBORNE. February 14 The inquest on the fire resulted in an open verdict, the jury expressing an opinion that the balance of evidence showed it to have originated in Nasmith's. It is generally considered that the fire was purely accidental. ASHBURTON. February 13. Mr. Hoskins, Miss Colville, Mdlle. Charbonnet, Mr. J. W. Marshall, and a select company gave a brilliant farewell entertainment last night to a crowded house. They leave to-day for their Middle Island farewell tour.
