PERTOBE is a-beautiful dapple brown • ; tallion, standing 16 hands high, Bred by H. Phillips, Esq., Victoria; in. 1569. Got by Panic (imported) ; his dam, I ester Grazebrook, by The Premier (im. •orted), out of Miss Napier, by Delapras(im. (jorted); Miss Napier's dam, Mrs. Roberts,. ! iy Wanderer (imported). See Victorian Stud Book, Vol. 11. , p. Ifl. Panic was im. ported from England to Tasmania, and put to the stud at 3 yrs. old. He was trained and raced at 4, and again put to the stud. When he was 6 yrs. old, lie was purchased at a high price aud imported to Victoria, where he had two more seasons' training and racing. He proved himself the best Knglish horse ever trained in Australia, H e ran remarkably well, and won several races, carrying heavy weights ; ho was both speedy and staying, of a most docile and 'iiiiet temper, with a wonderful constitution, aid legs like iron. Like his sire, that first. class English racehorse Alarm, "he was never sick, sorry, or lame," and retired from the turf without a blemish. At the stud, .although from being in an out-of-the-way ulace, he has not been favored by many iii'st-elass mares, he has got more winners mt of half-bred ones than any horse in Vic. coria, and for general purposes his stock is much esteemed.
la the breeding of PERTOBE there is a tombiiiation of some excellent strains of blood, such as the Waxy-Whalebone, in ;hat famous Hue through Defence, and which comes to him on the sides of both sire and dam. On his sire Pauie'a aids chere is, as well as his good Defence blood, chat of the game and stout Venison, the >owerfiil and speedy Melbourne, and, most excellent of all, that of Pantaloon. "Ti» value of the Pantaloon blood is undeniably ■laving furnished so many proofs, not aim as to its being speedy and staying, but i!a to its 'training ou,'and being ' running strain ;' for although, some othen. oecasionally produce one or two first-class tuimals, few, if any, can compete wife Pantaloon ai to numbers. A very grattdTfr! commendation of this strain of blood is, that it mixes successfully with, and improves, all •>thurs." Thus writes Copperthwaite, and other good turf authorities agree with him to the same effect. On the side of die dam of Pjsrtobk there is a lot of good blood coming in through The Pre. mier, whos3 graudsire, Tomboy, was by Jerry, out o£ the Ardrossan mare (the" dam of the mare Beeswing, not only as a first-class racnij,* but also as the maternal ancestress of England very best family of racehorses at the nftscnV time, viz., the Newminsters). The D-elapre blood is also very good indeed. Delaprf? dam, Fortress, by Defence, w&s the dam of the Derby winner, Pyrrhus, the First. Mrs, Uoberts, the great grand-clam of PERTOBB, was by Wanderer, and Wanderer's blood is good, lie being by Wanderer, by Gohanna,
I>y Mercury, by Jicupse. xu lasrnania, ; so much is the Wanderer blood thought of, chat they say "a bad one by Wandererwq never known," aud if they can trace a pedii to a Wanderer mare, they considor tfat quite sufficient. PELITOBE, by £ 3 § w "Augur," in the Australasian, Juuel* IS7S, says :—" I could rill the AustrsW ivith the doings of "Panic," and his* ccudants. As a aire of good, sound, * useful stock he has never had an cqi*: ciie Southern hemisphere.
