RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before T. W. Parkkr, Esq., 1t.i11.) DISORDERLY CONDUCT. Robert Greenless was charged with haying resisted and assaulted the police in the discharge of their duty, also with having assaulted the Depot Master of the Immigration Department. Alfred Hesketh, sworn, deposed : I am she Depot Master of the Immigration Department in Oamaru. I was at the wharf yesterday when the immigrants wen. landed from the Waitaki. I took charge of their bedding. They weae mad drunk, aid resisted all authority. When the} arrived at the Depot they became so insubordinate that I was obliged to send for lie police. The prisoner was the mosl •'iotous amongst them. He kicked mi several times, when Sergeant Beatty was securing him. Sergeant Beatty, sworn, deposed: From information received I took two 3onstables with me and repaired to the Immigration Depot. When we arrived ■ve got the men pacified, and gave them tea. The prisoner, who was lying on the loor, got up and took hold of a large stick and began to knock the table with it. He then broke some of the windows, uid behaved in such a way as to cause Mr. Hesketh to go forward and take hold of him. I then caught him by the arm. He kicked Mr. Hesketh while we were securing him, and after getting the handcuffs on him lie resisted all the way to the lock-up. Constable Cameron corroborated the previous evidence. His Worship in giving judgment said that he might have given the prisoner the benefit of his just having come off a lonij voyage, but for the blackguardism which he had exhibited in resisting the authorities. He would impose a penalty of L 5 or one month's imprisonment with hard labor.
The prisoner exclaimed as he left the dock, " Five pounds !"
