I There was a very good attendance at the Volunteer Hall last evening, when the Kelly and Leon Minstrels appeared in almost an entirely new programme. The only item of the previous evening's programme that was repeated was the farce " His Grace the Duke," and in reference to this Mr. Kelly made a statement to the audience which should be made public. Having apologised for being compelled to substitute " Hia Grace the Duke" for the farce announced in the programme, he said that the alteration was made through no fault of the management. They had sent their boxes containing the drcaacs and properties for
" Belles of the Kitchen" down to the railway station in Dunedin the day before the company left, hut up to that time they had not reached Oaniani, and he had therefore
to crave the indulgence of the audience. The programme presented was gone through to a highly satisfactory manner, and met with the hearty approval of the audience. The company appear this evening for the tatft time in Oamaru.

For forwarding printed plans of property by post as a supplement the proprietors of the Wairarapa Standard have had to pay a letter postage of 2s lid on each copy. The editor of the Standard naturally complains of this, and demands a refund of all the money, on the ground that printed plans "•are not of the nature of a letter," but are " printed matter only."
The power of C olonial legislators to make laws, the object of which would be to re-
strict Chinese innnigration, is thus referred to by the Australasian :—" It is," remarks oar contemporary. " a fact now " conceded by the highest authority, that the Colonial Legislature possesses ample powers to deal with the matter in any way they choose. After the Queensland case, in which the Home Government refused to assent to the Bitt imposing special taxation on the Chinese, on the ground that it was opposed to the I treaty obligations of the Empire, and afteri ward* on the Bill being again enacted by the Queensland Legislature, assented to it with- \ oat demur, it is impossible to suppose that iany limit exists to the competence of the t colonies to deal with the subject in accord- ; anee with the will of the majority," ! It a stated that a well-known and wealthy ! Hawkc's Bay merchant lost L 90.000 by the ; failure of the Glasgow Bank. So large are his resources, however, that this heavy loss did not even temporarily embarrass him. ; Some 200 men (says "Atticus" in the Leader) are employed in trying to capture the four youthful bushrangers, and still they arv at large. I don't want to enquire whether the police and detectives are inefficient, or whether the Kelly gang are too clever for them, but rather to contemplate i the matter from a purely business aspect. •• It is an ill wind that blows nobody good," and certainly the endeavor to capture the | outlaws has financially benefited the district in which they arc located. Money has circulated freely, and an impetus has been given to the trade of up-country sleepy hollows. Of soarsc. ©n the score of morality, the inhabitiants of Benalla and .Mansfield have no sympathy with the evil deeds of the Kellys, but while attempts to take the bushrangers are accompanied by such an open-handed expenditure of Government money, from a business point of view they would not object to the presence of a couple of desperadoes in their midst all the year round. » tfostKM* So>". and Co. are agents for the I celebrated Marsh Harvester and Automatic \ Crane Binder.—[AnvT.] Mi"'>»;V Savko and no time lost by using Ithe \tsrsh Harvester. —[Advt.
