OPENING OF THE RAILWAY TO INVERCARGILL.
Invercargill, January 22. The town has been keeping high holiday | to-day, in view of the opening of through traffic by rail between Christchurch and Invercargill. The day broke beautifully fine, and the sky has remained almost cloudless throughout the day. Shortly before four o'clock, at which time the train was announced to arrive, a large concourse of people assembled in the vicinity of the railway, and the band and volunteers were in attendance. Unfortunately, however, a telegram was received announcing the accident to Mr. Conyers, which cast a deep gloom on the whole of the after proceedings. Shortly after the train was announced, and on its nearing the platform a cheer was raised. The visitors were received by the Reception Committee, and after mutual greetings had been exchanged they repaired to their respective hotels, and the crowd dispersed. There was a good display of bunting in the principal streets, and in the evening the town was beautifully illuminated, the various devices in gas showing to great advantage. The Fire Brigade held a torchlight procession at the conclusion of the banquet.
