MR. HENRY VARLEY.

This famous evangelist gave the first of a series of addresses under the auspices of the Oamaru Young Men's Christian Association sit St. Paul's Church last evening, and was listened to by a large congregation, about 250 persons, representing almost every creed, being present. The singing was entrusted to an united choir numbering about 20 voices, under the leadership of Mr. D. Booth. After a hymn from the Sankey collection had been sung, and a prayer offered up, Mr. Varley gave a clear exposition of the Ist Philippians, and was listened to with marked attention. Another hymn was then sung, and was followed by a powerful and eloquent address by Mr. Varley on " The Sin of Unbelief," special invocations being made to those who had not up to the present time believed in Jesus Christ as God incarnate. The address was liberally illustrated, and the speaker succeeded in riveting the attention of his hearers by his eloquence and the earnestness of his language and manner. He laid great stress upon the fact that salvation was open to all, and was ever ready for their acceptance. The proceedings terminated in the usual manner. A Bible reading took place this afternoon, and was well attended. This evening Mr. Varley will deliver another address, and to-morrow afternoon he will hold a service for the young, when parents are i requested to send their children.
