NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
A special meeting of the Committee of the Benevolent Society was held at the secretary's office last evening, when there were present—Messrs. J. Falconer (President), Allen, Collis, Fleming, Gibbs, Greenfield, Hassell, Kerr, Milligan, Otterson, Paterson, Ronayne, Steward, and Hardy (Secretary). Mr. Milligan (Vice-President) stated that the tenders for the erection of a cottage for Mrs. Black were all much in excess of the sum which had been voted for that purpose. It was consequently resolved that none of them should be accepted, and further that fresh tenders be called for Thursday next, at noon. The Sub-Committee was delegated to attend to them. The President reported that he had received subscription lists for L 42 from Mr. T. Forrester, of Papakaio, being the amount collected in that district to assist the Oamaru Committee in aiding the widow and family of John Smith, who was killed near Pukeuri Point some time since. The Treasurer then brought up the question of the Baird Fund, and a Committee was appointed, consisting of the President, Treasurer, and Mr. Steward, to wait on Mr. Hislop to-day with reference to it. The usual vote of thanks terminated the meeting.
