On Tuesday Bassingthwaite, the defaulting bankrupt upon the person of whose wife upwards of LBOO were found hidden, was arrested and brought before the Court and remanded. The money, if available, will benefit' the creditors to the eitedt of 7a 6d in the pound. The heavy rains yesterday have done some damage Ihe the southern line, but it is now repaired. The ship Rangitikei cleared at the Customs yesterday for London, with a cargo valued at L 112,000. DUNEDIN. January 16. Sir. Bury, the architect to the Council, writes to the Star that only L 27,000 has been expended on the University buildings. For stealing a nugget of brass and disposing of it as gold, John Horscroft was sentenced to three months.
