WAIAREKA.

[from our own correspondent.] January 10. The weather still continues unusuallj dry, and there is little chance of mud rain falling now till after harvest. Tht crops are looking remarkably well, notwithstanding the drought, but tho yielj of grain will not be so great as in iuor favorable seasons. Though the wheat ii well-grown in many fields, yet it is some, what thin ; this will be an advantaa where self-binding machines are used. Already small fields of oats are ripening and throughout the whole district thi yellow tinge which shows matured groirfi is beginning to be seen. Potatoes seen to have suffered least from the effects 0! drought of any of the usual cropi; though some fields of early potatoes wen nipped with frost, the late ones are loot ing very healthy, and are giving promis of a good return of the favorite tuber. There will be very indifferent crops i turnips or carrots, for the weather h been too dry for these seeds to germinate and when favoring showers did ciusi them to spring up the young shoots vert greedily devoured by grubs. There is now a considerable pile ri large blocks of stone at the Oamaru Stom Company's quarry at Weston, awaiting » moval to some place where building i going on. The workmen at this quanj are cutting out stone now of really first rate quality. I think the Weston stom will compare favorably with most of thi stone in the Oamaru district, and when railway carriage becomes cheaper shoull be an inexhaustible mine of wealth to tin district.
