THE RACES.

The annual race meeting of the North Otago Turf Club commences to-morrow, and, although very little public excitement or-speculation has been aroused over any of the events, a capital day's sport may be looked fqr, There are, ve believe, a larger number of horses here than has previously been the case, and a grand turn out was made on the course this morning, when some twenty*flv'e horses went through their exercises, _ Judging from this, we may fairly anticipate that large fields will bo the order of the day. The Railway Department have made special arrangements for the running of trains to suit the convenience of country residents, and we have no doubt that large numbers will avail themselves of the opportunity afforded of attending the races and returning home in the evening. Special trains will leave town for the racecourse at 11. gO a.m. and noon, returning at 5.15 and 5,45 p,m, each day. Tho departure of ordinary trains will be delayed to the following hours :—Maerewhenua, 5 p.m. ; Dunedin, 5.30 p.m. ; Timaru, ii p.m. j Ngapara, 0 p.m. In addition to those special arrangements, all trains going North or coming' South will stop opposite the course, and single fares will be charged for the double journey. There is very little doing in tho way of betting, doubles being mostly indulged in.

For these 100 to 10 is offered and tafc, freely about the two handicaps, while;, to 5 is the price offered and taken abo, the Oamaru Grand Handicap and t£. Hurdle race. The odds on single [ are very short, 2 to 1 on the field bek' laid about the Oamaru Grand HandiJ' and 5 to 4 on the field about the Race. It is scarcely necessary to say there is not much doing at these prices, " Tim Whiffier" send 3 ua the followk tips for to-morrow'a races: — MAIDEN PLATE.
