THE WATERWORKS.

The following report from the Engineer was read at last evening's meeting of the Municipal Council :

Oamaru Waterworks Engineer's Office, Oamaru, sth December, IS7B. His Worship the iiayor and Councillors. CiEXTLaJiEX, —I have the honor to report that the daymen are employed attending to the various works recently ordered to be done by the Council, and that generally throughout the town the streets and roads are in fair order. In the waterworks contract, very good progress has been made during the last month.

The Awamoko section is very nearly finished, all the earthwork being done, and only some timber work to do, which could be easily finished by the end of this month.

In the Papakaio section there are over GO men engaged in race-cutting alone, the work and progress made being satisfactory. The Frew's Gully aqueduct is also being built in a satisfactory manner. I may mention that none of the aqueducts have in any way been affected by the recent high winds. In the Landon section the tunnel driving is being vigorously done, and there now remains only 2S chains to do. The inlet tunnel to the reservoir is completely lined and finished, and the outlet pipe tunnel has been properly put through and some of the lining put in. The excavation in the reservoir will all be finished next week, when the bank will be at once filled in.

As there was a considerable quantity of porous material in the bottom which had to be taken out, the excavation lias been considerably in excess of what was originally contemplated. As to timber supply, which has been rather short lately, I believe the contractor has arranged for the rest of the quantity required, to be delivered at the rate of some 50,000 ft per month, the first instalment being shortly expected. The state of the works may be taken as follows :—Black Point section, finished ; Awamoko section, seven-eighths do ; Papakaio section, one-quavter do ; Landou section, five-eiehths do. —I am, &c., D. M'Leop, Engineer.
