The Evening Mail WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURIST. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1878.

It is highly creditable to the Committee of the Mechanics' Institute that it has resolved to assist the sufferers by the Waimato fire by giving an entertainment in their behalf, and we were pleased because Mr. Sumpter's announcement of the fact at the conclusion of Mr. Fidlor's lecture the other evening drew forth such genuine expressions of approval from the audience. Although it was decided to give an entertainment consisting of readings, music, &c., immediately after the fact of the necessitous circumstances of the sufferers became known, yet there have been difficulties in th» way of carrying out the idea. Nr; uerous , entertainments, with which tA'J "public have been surfeited of ; .j;; ( j thc difficulties usually met with lU endeavoring to arrange a miscellaneo'j- entertainment, such as that "iteniled to be given, have interposed themselves and rendered it desirable and necessary to delay the date. We hope that the Committee will so arrange that there will be a full house and a sum to hand over to the sufferers that will do them good and redound to the credit of Oamaru.

A special meeting of the Committee of the Horticultural Society was held last evening at Mr. Earle's rooms, for the purpose of arranging matters in connection with thc late Show. The members present were—Messrs. Council (in the chair), Simpson, Lemon, Montagu, Glen, and Spratt (Hon. Sec). After arranging as to the time for paying over the ordinary and special prizes and discussing some routine business, the meeting terminated.

A match was played in Mr. Borton's paddock this afternoon between the Carisbrook Juniors, Dunedin, and the Oamaru High School Club, and resulted in a victory for thc home team. The Carisbrook were the first to go to the wickets, and were disposed of for 27, Hackworth making 5 ; Austin, 4 ; and Edwards, not out, 3. The first innings of the Oamaru team closed for 22, for which Rice alone contributed !), only three others scoring. In thc second innings thc Carisbrook put together 24, Austin, Edwards, Simpson, and Gray being the highest scorers. Oamaru thus required 30 to win, and they managed to secure this and a little to spare before all the wickets fell. Thc chief scorers were D. Moore (IS). Griffith (3), and Ham (4). Some very good bowling was shown on both sides, Bannatyne's being specially admired. For the Carisbrook, (.'!. M. Morris and Fuller also bowled well, and R. Hewat and Todd did good service for Oamaru. The fielding of the visitors was exceptionally good, and their method of backing up very noticeable. Some very pretty catches were made ou both sides, and Hackworth's wicketkeeping was considered excellent. The monthly Committee meeting of the North Otago Horticultural Society will be held on Monday next, at Mr. Earle's rooms, at 8 o'clock.

We are vet) nested to direct the attention of the Catholics, of the district to the adjourned nfsafon of the Jesuit Fathers, which will certainly open on the Sth and end on the loth December.

It will he soon by advertisement in another column that the Secretary of the North Otago Horticultural Society intimates that all prize-takers at the late Show can obtain payment of their prizes on application to Mr. Falconer, the Treasurer,. This is as it should be—prompt settlement.
