The Evening Mail. WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURIST. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1878.

The Marionettes were greeted by another large audience at the Volunteer Hall last evening, when the programme of the previous evening again met with the hearty applause of the audience. This afternoon a matinee for the benefit of children was given, and proved highly diverting to the large number of juveniles who attended. This evening the Marionettes will appear for the last time in Oainaru. The establishment of communication between the Breakwater and the Harbor Board Chambers by means of telephone is likely very soon to become an accomplished fact. Tenders for the erection of the wives are called for, and must be sent in to the Secretary not later than to-morrow. A promenade concert in connection with the Waiareka Church Bazaar will be given in Messrs. Council and Clowes store tomorrow evening, at S o'clock. The programme will include a song by Mrs. Clowes, pianoforte solos by Miss Tewsley, and violin solos by Mr. (!. Jones. This concert should prove an additional attraction for persons to visit the Bazaar.

At the special meeting of the Waitaki Road Board yesterday, Mr. .lames Bee was appointed valuator for the district at a salary of L3O. Mr. John Adams, of Kakanui, has been appointed ranger for that district. It appears that the announcement published in onv Wellington telegrams yesterday to the ell'ect that the Premier was about to visit Oainaru was erroneous. Sir Ooorg.Grey, it now appears, is going to Kawau. Some interesting trials of the strength of horses are, we believe, to take place at Kakanui next week. Two well-known residents having had some little argument as to the strength of their respective horses, decided to put them to the test, and a match was at once arranged for L."io a-side. Afterwards a third owner of horses challenged one of those engaged in this match, and another trial of the strength of their favorite animals was arranged for, the stakes being the same as in the. first contest. The whole of the horses are splendid specimens of the Clydesdale breed, and very interesting trials are anticipated, not only by their owners, but by a large number of residents in the district.

We are requested to remind exhibitors that all exhibits must be on the grounds as follows Sheep and pigs before S a.m.: cattle. St a.m.; horses and other exhibits before 10 a.m.

The Horticultural Society's Show which opens to-morrow promises to lie a great success. In addition to exhibits from local people, wo understand that several Dunedin florists intend competing. A band will be in attendance during the evening.
