SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

[from oup. own correspondent.] BALCLUTHA. October 14, -9 a.m. Five minutes ago our bridge we were so proud of gave way at the second pier. From the draw-bridge southwards last night the chambers in each span were rising and falling as though some superhuman power were elevating and lowering them ; but up to midnight it seemed to be able to weather the storm. This morning at daylight the creaking of its timbers were heard, then the upper part of the pier broke with a crash and settled down about two feet ; then within half-an-hour it gave way and went down the river. The bridge still hangs minus the pier, the deck planking being in the river where the pier stood.
