WAITAKI ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday, when there were present— Messrs Evans (in the chair), Borrie, Nicoil, Johnston. Council, P. Aitchison, Procter, Duncan, Borton, Schluter, and Oliver (Engineer). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter having been read from the Under-Secretary, disallowing clause 10 of the by-laws, the clause was struck out. A letter was read from the Waiareka Road Board, with reference to works on the boundary road, through blocks 4 and it, Awamoko, and it was decided that a deputation, consisting of Messrs. Johnston, Aitchison, and Borrie, with power to act, should wait on the Waiareka Boad Board at their next meeting. A telegram was read from Mr. Hislop, M.H.R., with reference to the Papakaio pre-emptive. It was resolved that the Chairman should wait on the County Council at next meeting, with a view to having a joint petition presented to the House, and the clerk was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of Mx\ Hislop's telegram, and advise him of the steps taken. Mr. Duncan in accordance with notice moved " That the rates, with subsidy thereon, be spent within the subdivisions hi which they are raised, but that the liability incurred for land and fencing on Coal Pit Road be recognised as a district fund liability." Mr. Schluter seconded the motion. Mr. Borton moved, as an amendment —"That in future all the funds of the Board be kept as one account." Mr. Procter seconded the amendment. On the question being put the amendment was negatived by 6 to 4. On the original motion 5 voted for and 5 against, and the Chairman gave his casting vote with the noes, the motion being therefore lost. On the Board proceeding to levy a rate, a petition was read from several ratepayers in the Weymouth Subdivision, praying that the Board would not levy a Od. rate. The members for the various subdivisions handed in the estimates for proposed works during the current year, and after a number of divisions, the rate was fixed at 6d. in the £, payable on the 14th December. The Chairman having reported what had been done with reference to bringing into force the Local Elections Act, it was decided to make the necessary application to the Governor. A petition, signed by a large number of settlers in the Papakaio and Weymouth subdivisions, was read, asking the Board to construct a bridge on the road-line between Block 1 and HI, Papakaio district. Mr. Duncan moved " That the request
of petitioners be acceded to. and that the bridge might be erected." Mr. Johnston seconded the motion.
