The Evening Mail. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1878.

There seems, to be a feeling »f satisfac- !; tioh'-pervading this, community at the . manner, in which our members of the House of Representatives have worked during the session now supposed to be drawing to a close. At any time, provided that they do not belie their title and act in opposition to the wishes of their constituents, members of the House ( ,f Representatives are deserving of the gratitude of those whom they represent ; for they lose much more <>r less valuable time, and for a third at, least of their existence bid adieu to domestic comfort. No one knows but those who hare been in Wellington dnrine the session what hard work a conscientious representative has' to give in return for the affix " M.H.R." We have read with pleasure the accounts of the progress of the measures in which we are more particularly interested through Parliament; but we are prone to forget that the operation of putting them through is both tedious and arduous. Those who'are entrusted with Bills, if faithful to their constituents, are. in a state of continual excitement until the measures in their charge are out of danger. Mr. Shkimski is deserving of the warmest gratitude of the people of Oamaru for the exertions which he must | have put forth in watching the Waitaki < High School and Oamaru Water Works Bills through both Houses of Parliament. Mr. Hislop has charge of the Harbor Board Bill, which, in his hands, will be sure to pass, having arrived at its last stage. These three measures are pregnant with peculiar interest for Oamaru, and will enable our town to be made second to none in the colonies in every respect. We would suggest that Messrs. UisLor and SmirasKi on their return home should be accorded a hearty ' reception by the people of Oamaru. They have done well, and are worthy of our cheers.
