THE CORN EXCHANGE AND MARKET.

At the meeting of the Municipal Council last evening, the question of' the proposed Corn Exchange and Market, initiated at the annual meeting of the Agricultural and -Pastoral Association, again cropped up. A letter from the solicitors was read, giving the opinion that the Council had not the power- to grant the lease applied for by Mr. Connell for 66 years forthe purpose, but might let it for 21 years! The following telegram from the Hon. ■Mr. Macandrew was also read :

His Worship the Mayor, Oamaru. Wellington, September 12, IS7B. ■• Government lias been applied to on behalf of agriculturists in North Otago for site on which to erect Market and Corn Exchange in Oamaru. Many years ago, certain sections were Crown granted "to the Superintendent, in trust for this purpose, which sections were subsequently conveyed by an Ordinance of the Provincial Council to the Municipality of Oamaru for like purposes. Before dealing with the application in question, it is desired to know what steps the Corporation has-taken to give effect to the object of the trust. Would you be good enough to. inform me accordingly.—J, Maoaxdrew.

The Mayor said that Mr. Macandrew was slightly in error in his statements. There was no reserve in the town set apart for a Corn Exchange, which appeared to be the primary object of the promoters, though there was a reserve for a public market.

Some little discussion took place upon the matter, after which it was resolved :

That Mr. Oonnel! bo informed that the Council is willing- to give facilities for the establishment of a public Market anil Corn Exchange so far as it legally may. That the longest term for which the Market lleservo could be leased for this purpose is 21 years, and that such letting must take place by tender or auction. That a condition of the leasing would be that a public Market and Corn Exchange bo erected within twelve months from date of lease, according to plans previously approved by the Council, the value

of such building to bo not less than That the Major reply to the Hon. Mr. Macandrew, asking who are the parties who have made application to him, and for what laud, and informing him of the last passed resolution.
