September 4. A crowded and enthusiastic meeting of •own and country people was held last night to consider the Public Works Starement. In the absence of the Mayor. Mi". B iri;ic- -at,' 0. f i;ii: ni ii! of the Waini-w County Council. took the chair. Speeches were made showing how fait.li had he n broken with Nelson in the matter of the Coast Railway. The following resolutions were passed unanimously : Tiiat the essence of the Public Works policy was the construction of main trunk iin : s through both islands, and the people of Nelson supported that policy on tha : gr und ; and by the Public Works Statements of successive govern merits, and by the Railway Act of 3873, the line from Nelson to the West Coast and thence to C int-'rbiiry wjis recognised as part of that main trunk line." "That this mctinc; views with utmost alarm the proposal of Government to «mtir*-ly excludthis district from all participation in the new works to be undertaken within the next five years." " Tiiat the NVlson representatives be requested to bring the foregoing resolutions under the notice of the Government before the Assembly, and to use their utmost endeavors to procure some material modification of the present ministerial proposals, which, if carried into effect will inflict much gross injuarioe np >n those residing in the northern part of this island."
