THE RAILWAY PASSENGER STATION SITE.

•■ A public meeting, convened by his ■■ Worship the Mayor in response to a requisition from a number of ratepayers, ; was held last evening in the Volunteer H.-' ll for the purpose of considering what steps should be taken with regard to Mr. Conyera' proposal to place the railway pnssenger station near the Gasworks. The hall was crowded, and the meeting was unquestionably th& rowdiest and most disgraceful that it has ever been our misfortune to attend. Shortly after 8 o'clock his Worship the Mayor took the chair, and although chairs were provided, not a single individual appeared on the platform. The Chairman having briefly explained why lie had called the meeting, explained that such short notice had been given in consequence cf that being the only night during the week on which the hall could be obtained. He said he had no doubt that, there was a very great difference of opinion upon the question before the inee'hjg, t.nt no matter who rose to speak he ho;,r-d they would be given credir. for hon"sf!v i iit«-r!::i : 'i;i-/ (h-iv opinions, and ■>'4c ■ 1 ; U:t ..V"V%- se-ea'-.-i- r.o mater what h'.-i vk-v.s iideht be, ■< onld br hsfoiied to j pa'e iitiy. it.- Considered :-'t* matter one ] of vast. ii!i,)o: t leco to the r»v;n. and hop> d | that whatever deeis'on was arrived »t, it I .v..;ild :>■• t' 1 e r: sob of car fill consideration and calm deliberation. He knew J nothing of the resolutions to be brought forward, or who were their proposers and seconders, but the meetiug was now open, and it was competent for some gentleman to open the business by proposing a resolution. After waiting some little time, Mr. Rifctre Young mounted the platform, amidst applause and a general uproar. He said the Mayer had told the meeting not to make a mistake. Well, let them support Mr. Con3'ers and they would make no mistake. The passenger station would be away from the goods station ; at any rate he thought it should be north of the Lagoon, though he would ttot say north of the Gasworks. A fatal mistake would be made if the station was placed on the Lagoon,—(Applause and ;

hisses.) Referring to the fact of the Council having undertaken to contribute L3OOO towards the expense of" filling up the Lagoon, he said the town was not in a position to give so much of the ratepayers' money towards-making a passenger station. He concHided by moving the following resolution : —" That this meeting pledges itself to support Mr. Conyers in getting the passenger station north of the Lagoon." Mr. J. Main seconded the motion. Mr. lies said he had an amendment to propose. If the site chosen by Mr. Conyers were adopted it would cause great inconvenience to the town and to the travelling public. It would be far away from the business centre. (A voice : Away from the barber's shops. Laughter, applause, and general uproar.) Mr. lies attempted to proceed with his remarks, but cncluded by moving the following amendment : — :< That the site proposed by Mr. Conyers would be an inconvenient one for the travelling public, and inimical to the interests of tlie town generally."
