It was arranged that the party should be entertained at luncheon in the Railway Goods Shed, the luncheon bt-ing open to the general public, tho price of tickets fixed at 10s. 6\l. It was decided to call for tenders for the supply of the luncheon, and the meeting adjourned until Thursday next, at II a.m. For the convenience of tho.-e who wish to remain at Duntroon, on the occasion of the ploughing match, longer than # the time allowed for ordinary trains, the Railway de- | parturient have arranged for a special train to leave Maerewhenua for Oamaru, at 7 p.m. ' on the 30th inst. At St. Luke's Church yesterday morning, the Rev. A. Gifford announced that, in consequence of reeeut n ws from Europe showing the unsettled state of affairs on the Continent, the thanksgiving services for th.establishment of peace would not be held at present. A meeting of the School committee will be held at Mr. Hardy's office, Wearstreet, to-morrow, at half-pa-it seven o'clock in the eveniug, to consider a letter from the Education Board in reference to tho proposed additions to the school buildings. - We are informed by several residents in various parts of the town that a sharp shock of an earthquake occurred about a-quarter to three o'clock on Saturday afternoon. We did not feel the shock, and consequently did not mention the f.ict in our last issue. T"e earthquake seems to have been experienced in all parts of t )tas.'o. Councdlor H. Si Fish objects to the Dttnedin < ity Council expending any of its funds in entertaining the visitors to that city on the occasion of the opening of through railway communication to Imuedin, and has obtained a legal opinion upon the subjt.ee from Messrs Chapman and Strode. Those gentlemen state plainly that the expenditure of any portion of the Borough funds for such a purpose would be illegal. They say : "We think the Council by involving the Corporation-in a liabdity in respect of, or expending a portion of the Borough fund upo ■, the proposed entertainment of members of the General Assembly, will altogether exceed their imwGrs, aud that each member assenting t > this vote will render himself personally liable for the amount of any contract entered into." After quoting authorities in support of their opinion, Messrs. Chapman and Strode conclude ny recommending that formal notice be at once g:ven to the Mayor and every other councillor, calliug attention tn tho consequences of their ar.ts, and that a similar notice be given to the Town demand the City Treasurer.
