OPENING OF THE RAILWAY TO DUNEDIN.
«. MUNICIPAL COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening for the purpose of making arrangements for the reception of his Excellency the Governor and the members of Parliament on the occasion of the opening of the last section of the railway to Dunedin. There were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Headland, Procter, Humphrey, and Spence. His Worship the Mayor said he had telegraphed to Wellington for the purpose of ascertaining whether the Governor would accompany members of Parliament on their trip south. He had received replies in the affirmative. He had consulted with the Chairman of the Harbor Board on the subject, and had suggested that a joint Committee should be ap* pointed to make the necessary arrangements. The following telegrams were read : Government Buildings, August 22,1878. -His Worship the Mayor, Oamaru. His Excellency will accompany the members of Parliament on their visit South next month. Fred Le Patouheo, Private Secretary, Government Buildings, August 22,1878. I W. J. Steward, Esq., Mayor, Oamaru. Railway Opening.—His Excellency will leave for Lyttelton on board H. M.S. Nymphe the day before Hinemoa leaves with members. G. Gret. After some discussion, the following resolutions were carried : That his Worship the Mayor, Councillor Procter, j anil the Town Clerk, he a Committee to make arrange- i ments in conjunction with a similar Committee appointed 03- the Harbor Board for the reception of his Excellency the Governor and the members of Parlia- j ment on the occasion of the opening of the railway to Duiiedin, and that a sum not exceeding £SO be placed at the disposal of such Committee for the purpose, [
That the citizens be, inrited to put the to*n as much as possible en fete by the display of flays, &e. : That it is undesirable to proclaim a public holiday, as the appearance of the town is spoilt by the closing of the establishments. * That an address be presented to his Excellency, and that the same be made as short as possible, in order not to ' elay the proceedings. The Mayor to prepare the address. HARBOR BOARD. At the meeting'of the Harbor Board to-day, Mr. Steward drew the attention of th« Board to the proposed visit of his Excellency the Governor and members of Parliament on the occasion of opening through railway communication. He pointed out what the Municipal Council had done in the matter, and he thought that as one of the greatest reasons for inducing the party to make a stoppage in Oamaru was in order that the harbor works might be inspected, the Board should join the Corporation in entertaining the Governor and the members of Parliament. After a little discussion it was resolved, That a Sub-Committee consisting of the Chairman, Secretary, and Mr. Meek, be appointed to act in conjunction' with the Sub-Committee appointed by the .Municipal Council, with a view to arranging for tlio reception of his Excellency the Governor and the members of Parliament, she Board to defray half of the expenses incurred ; the Town Clerk to be convener of the joint Committee. It was arranged that the joint Committee should meet on Monday, at 11 a.m.
