The Evening Mail. THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1878.
We yesterday received a telegraphic report of Tuesday evening's sitting of the House of Representatives, consisting of about 2t)CO words uttered by members upon the Electoral "Bill. It-was quite impossible to insert it in our last issue owing to pressure of other matter, and we, therefore, decided to hold it over untd to-day, but again we f»und it impossible to make room for if, »e«ing that we could not insert the lengthy ' debate in our columns without crowding out other matter which wa believe to be of more 1 interest. We have preserved the manu- ' script of th« telegram, c insisting of 2000 words, which is open to 'he perusal of any of the pnblic who would like to practically and indisputably demonstrate that they differ from us. It i 3 good reading. It is, indeed. The friends of Mr. George B«rch, who was for some time in the Colonial Bank here aud ; was promoted to Christchnrch. will bo glad to ' learn that he has received further promotion, having been appointed manager of the branch of the Colonial Bank at luvercargdl. The football match played to-day between . a team from the Chrs'church College and the Onmara Club resulted n a victory for ■ the visitors, who scored two touch-down-by Smith and Beswick to the one touchdown made by T. Kerr for the local team. , The game was very much interfered with by the crowding of the ground by the spectators, and though it is by no means our wish to detract from the really good play of ' the member of the visiting team who 1 secured the last touch-down, there ia in ! our mind little doubt that the score would not have been made had our men been able to see the ball; so the}' may consider that the game would have at the most resulted in a draw had i£ not been for the unseemly ! crowding of people old enouah to know • better. The game had a great deal of the s scrimmage element in it and few runs were made. 1 A special meeting of the Municipal Conu- \ a\ will be held this evening, at half-past * seven o'clock, for the purpose of: making arrangements with reference to the proposed visit of members of Parliament to Oamaru . on the occasion of the oDening of railway communication to Dunediu. The friends of Mr. Jam-s Gardiner will be ' pleased to lf-arn that he has so far recovered from hi 3 late accident as to be able to relieve rhe monotony of the »ast few weeks by moving about on era eho*. A syno. si-tof tni- leeeints and expenditure of the VVaicaki Rool Board for the »ear ending 31st March, IS7S, appears in another column. r . Mail* for Australia*per Alhambrs close at 11 a.m. on Saturday, 24. h hi3t. A special meeting of the Harbor Board will be held at the usual time to-morrow morning, for the consideration of important business. A meeting of the Oamaru Che33 Club was held at the Mechanics' In-titute last evening, and was very wetl attendel. The minutes of the previous meeting hiving been read and continued, several new me •■herwere elected, and it wis decile 1 to hold an instruction meeting on Wedtie-d-iv ev>'ittnn next. After the -or-etii.g several members played some spirit- d »», a grc >-t improvement in the play of some of them b ing noticeable Instruction was al-o given in the rules md rudiments or" the game. We are plea-ed to rind that a very g-eat amount of interest is King t .ken in the Club, which is in a very flourishing condition. It is to behoped that the interest will i>e maintained, for if it is the Oamaru Chess Club wdl enjoy a successful career. It already numbers several very good players, and we have no doubt many more will be induced to join its ranks. 1 The weekly meeting of the Yonng Men's Christian Association was held yesterday, the Vice-President (Mr J. H. Milh'gan) presi.tinc. Various subjects were introduced by the members present, much interesting discussion taking place thereon. Reference having been made to the interview of Saul with The witch of Kndor, and a difference of opinion appearing to exist as to the nature of the apparition then produced, it was agreed to discuss the subject at a future meeting. A meeting of the Board took place afterwards, Mr. C. G. Moore (President) in the chair. ■ The Treasurer reported that the proceeds of the late lecture amounted to L 7 13.1. 6d. It wa3 resolved to convey the thanks of the Association to the Rev. Mr. Mirams for his interesting and instructive lecture. It having been reported that the choir in connection with the Association now numbered 20 menders the President was congratulated on his success in this direction. A delegate having been appointed to attend the forthcoming conversazione of the Dunedin Society (in response to their invitation) the meeting terminated in the usual manner.
