STABBING CASE AT PAPAKAIO.

A case of stabbing of a very serious nature occured at Papakaio at a late hour last night or early this morning. Three men named Thomas Black, Frank Hensal, alias Thompson, and Andrew Henderson, all of whom are engaged working in the coal mines in the district, had been indulging pretty freely in liquor of a strong nature, and. were going home. When at Big Hill a dispute of some kind arose, ending in a tight between Hensal and Henderson. After using their lists for a little time Hensal pulled out a pocketknife aud stabbed Henderson in the groin, the knife penetrating deeply into the flesh in a downward direction. Hensal then made oil', and Black assisted Henderson to one of the miner's huts. A lad at once was despatched to town for medical assistance, and Dr. Garland, accompanied by Mounted Constable Welsh, proceeded to the spot, arriving thereat about half past three o'clock this morning. Henderson was found to be in a very low state, having lost a considerable amount of blood. The wound, which is a very nasty one, was dressed by Dr. Garland, who stated that the knife had narrowly escaped penetrating a vital part. Hensal was afterwards discovered in his bunk with his clothes on, and was arrested and brought into town this morning by the lirst train. He was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, and remanded for a week, the doctor having stated that Henderson would not be in a tit state for removal for some time. There is every prospect of his recovery, though his recovery is likely to occupy some time.
