TELEGRAMS.
WELLINGTON. August 12. It is understood that the Licensing Hill has been withdrawn, and that another Licensing Bill, much shorter and of quite a different character, will in a few days be submitted to the House. <•> AUCKLAND. August 10. The Chamber of Commerce has passed the following resolutions :—l. That the Government be urged to push on the trunk railway to Wellington as quickly as possible. 2. That the Chamber completely approves of the abandonment of the ad valorem duties, which have caused a diminution of the revenue, and an increase of fraudulent practices ; and that telegrams be sent to southern Chambers inviting co-operation in this i-eform. 3. That the high tariff on piece goods presses heavily on the working classes, and that M-o Government be urged to modify the .arid' in order to equalise the duty. 4. That the Chamber approves of the intention of the Government to diminish the number of dutiable articles, so simplifying the tariff, and reducing the cost of collection, and further oordially approves of the abolition of duties merely levied for protection purposes. 5. That the Chamber approves of the reduction of the duties on the necessaries of life, and the imposition of a moderate land tax. G. That the attention of the Government be drawn to the silver coinage question, and particularly to that of worn and defaced coins. The Harbor Board has settled the disputes with the dock contractors, and agreed to take the dock over. It is proposed to hold a meeting to congratulate Earl Beaconsfield. The sons of old colonists intend petitioning Parliament for the same privileges in selecting free land as have been allowed to immigrants. CHRISTCHURCH. August 11. Yesterday, 100 seats in the dress-circle, for Mr. W. Hoskins' benefit, were sold bv auction, and realised from 0s to ISs each. Subsequently all the other seats were engaged at ">s each. Af r. R. D. Thomas, solicitor-, was violently assaulted in the public street I yesterday, it is believed as the result of a business dispute. i The police case between Tilly Andrews, | the actress, and her husband was settled I out of Court. It is understood that the ; latter agrees to give up his wife's ward- ! robe, ifcc, and that a deed of separation | will be drawn up. INYERCARGILL. August 10. Mr. Martin reports the sale of Mr. Young's Ermedale estate, with stock and plant, for L 20.000. TIMARU. August 11. This afternoon the Catholics had a procession of total abstainers, under the superintendence of Father Henneberry, in which 300 men, women, and children, joined, and proceeded round the town. The procession was witnessed by a large concourse \oi people. At the church tonight the Catholics renew their baptismal vows.
