WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
We continue our report, of yesterday's meeting of the County Council us follows": The reports of the Engineers and Inspector of Works were read, and in reference to the ro-id in Prydo's Gully the Council, on the motion of Mr. Johnston, agreed to vote a sum of L 57 for its completion. The Clerk read t';e following telegram from the Chairman : " Wellington, August 8. "Charitable aid and hospitals undor consideration of Conference. Government oti'er to give pound for pound locally contributed by County Councils and Municipalities. I carried resolution accepting this by narrow majority. Several members wish to put all endowments into common purse. This would seriously affect Oaniaru Hospital. I propose that Counties and Municipalities should contribute in proportion to the rateable value of the property within respective Counties and Boroughs. I propose to make Wailnate. County contribute also. Write the views of Council. "Koukht Camhjkll. " James Martin, " County Council, Oaniaru." Some discussion took place. upon the matter, the action of the Chairman being eventually endorsed. Messrs. M'Pherson, Maheno, wrote ' "■' the conditions' ..uder which they ■voiihi agree to give, the land required for' the road to Island Stream bridge. It was decided to write to the Otepopo Road Hoard asking if they will agree to exI chaise the old for the now road line. K'r. Murcott then, in accordance with I x'-ice of motion, proposed "That a stun of L'JO each be voted to the cemeteries at.» Hampden and Otepopo, to bo expended .*«, n general repairs." Mo.said he could not •see why the country cemeteries should not be beautified as well as the town cemetery, lie would be happy to include my other country cemeteries in the • notion.
The Livingstone and Goorg«>*own cenwtcries having been added to the motion, it was seconded by M>. Morton, and carried, including an amendment proposed by Sir. Todd and seconded by Mr. Johnston, to contribute 1.l for every LI collected in each. Mr. Mnrcott moved " That, the Chairman, in conjunction with tlie members; for tlie Waitaki, Messrs. Hislop and; Shrimski, be requested to assist during,' this session of the Assembly in amending. he Counties Act in such a form that the: County Councils may be able to levy a, rate in any riding in the County without imposing a general rate." The motion was seconded by Sir. Worton, and carried. ft was decided, on tho motion of Mr. Murcott, to communicate with the ChairMiau with reference to the County's share in the Canterbury hand fund. On the suggestion of Mr. Mnrcott, it' -vas agreed that tlie Chairman be communicated with as to tho County's share im 'he Canterbury land fund.
