RAILWAY EXTENSION TO LIVINGSTONE.
A. meeting of the Oamaru-iSfasoby Railway Committee was held at the County Council this morning, for tlie puri>oso of considering the surveyor's report upon the proposed routes of the railway extension contemplated to Livingstone. There were present Messrs. Steward (in the chair), Reid. Menlove, Evans, Lees. Brown, Dermison, Gibbs, and Sumpter (hou. secretary). Tho minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, the report of the surveyor—which has already been published iu our columns—was read through and criticised at some length. Some discussion cook place as to the probability of the Government constructing the line, Mr. Snmpter remarking that he thought it would be well for the Committee at once to abandon ali idea of the line being made by the Colony, and at onco set to work to devise tiie best means of getting the line constructed. The Chairman thought the line, being one which was merely an extension of an existing Government line, was-one that the Colony might fairly lie called upon to construct, After diseussiiu.' matters at smut: length, Sir. iteid moved, li That a petition to both Houses of Parliament be prepared for signature in the town and 'iistrict, and that the Chairman ami Secretary be empowered to employ a person or persons to take vound the same for signatures; that said petition set forth tlie facts of Mr. I'ssher's report and the reasons why the construction ol tlie iino should be at once undertaken by the Government ; the Chairman, Secretary, and Mr. Lees to draft such petition." Tiie motion was seconded by Mr. Brown, and curried, Tiie Commit'ieo having decided to wail as a deputation w,on Mr. Hislop, M.H.il., to consult with him and ask his assistance in tho matter, the meeting terminated with tlie usual vote of thanks to Chairman.
