RAILWAY TO LIVINGSTONE.
As we stated in a previous issue, the residents of Livingstone are bestirring themselves in the matter of the proposed railway extension to Livingstone. The following petition is now in course of signature : To the Honorable thr House of RkI'RKSKNTATIVKS »N I'AULIAMEXT AsSEMHUSI'. I'lic Petition of the undersigned, residents of the Township of Livingstone, miners on the Mae re wlnum a. gold field, and farmers and others resident in the Maerewhenua district, humbly slicweth—'l hat the establishment of railway communication with Livingstone is earnestly to be desired, inasmuch as at present the only access to the .township is by an indifferent road, while the nature of the country is T-uch that there are no engineering difficulties in the way o{' constructing a railway. • Tli.at the railway from Oamarn to Ngapara, known as the Waiareka Branch L'ne, could be extended to Livingstone, either by a continuation of the line from the present terminus at K'gapara, or by a branch line I from the Y\ indsor or Teaneraki Stations. That the country which would be traversed by such extension <>r branch line is good ugricn,tu>-al country, a large part of which is still in the hands of the Crown ; and tile line would, there is no doubt, at once yield good returns for the outlay involve] in its construction, in proof of which y..i-.i- J) ititioi-:-/ refer to the fact, that the \N aiareku bra ch line, as far as i.h-eady eonsiTiictrMi, :s one of the be;;t paying branch >';r not the best) in trie Colony. Your petitioners further submit that a survey o» the proposed extension of the said Waiareka railway to Livingstone has been made under direction of the Govern- j fnent during the recess, and we believe tint I
the report, which will doubtless be laid before your Honorable House, will bear out the allegations of this petition. Tour petitioners further submit that, seeing that the line to Npipara\)s worked by thq. Government; it would obviOKslv be advantagcous that the suggested ex -nsion to Livingstone should aTso be under the same administration, as tending to economy of working ; and as your petitioners are convinced that such extension will yield satis, factory pecuniary returns, they humbly pray that the construction of the same may be sanctioned br your honorable Houh'o during the present session. And your petitioners will ever pray.
