MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Council, was held to-day, for the purpose of receiving and looking over the papers prepared by his "Worship the Mayor and the Municipal Engineer, for submission to the membei's for the disfv'ct in connection with the "Waterworks Bill. There were present—His Worship tile Mayor, Councilors Gibbs, Spence, and Mainland. The papers having been read through, they were adopted and ordered to be handed to Mr. Shrimski, M.H.R. The letter from Mr. Lowe, Resident Engineer, giving notice of the intention of the department to lay temporarily two lines of rails on the Esplanade North, was further considered, and a plan showing the effect of the proposal was laid on the table by the Engineer. This showed that the proposal would take up 18 chains in length of the Esplanade, or a space of 9i acres. It was resolved, " That the Council will oppose by every means in its power any attempt to encroach upon the public Esplanade in the manner proposed, and that the Mayor telegraph to Mr. Lowe stating this, and also that the land is leased, and that the lessee has likewise a right to object. The members for the district and the Minister for Public Works to be coin- I municafed with on the subject." I The Council then adjourned.
