OAMARU STEEPLECHASE CLUB'S MEETING.
The Animal Steeplechase Meeting of the above Club took place to-day. The following are the resulis : Maiden Stewleciiask of 40 sovs.; about i miles, eve. such country as the Stewards may appoint ; for all horses that have never won a Steeplechnso of 20 sovs., Matches and Hack l!aoes excepted. (Hanku/s; . •£' Bot-tiug ; 2 to 1 against Silverstroain and i'akeha, 3 to 1 Tommy and Baron, 4 and 0 to 1 against the others. Pakelia, Cronie, Nelly, Tommy, and Baron, also ran. Shark was scratched, and Turk did not put in an appearance. When the flag fell the seven horses started away at a gentle canter. Baron, Billy Buttoji, and Cronie led over the hurdles opposite the Stand in the order named, Rakeha th-n rushed to the front, ami cleared the next jump, a gorse hedge, in fine style, but he refused when he came to the water-jump, and his bad example was fallowed by ail the other horses but Silverstyeam. This line old m>ey cleaved tiio dreaded water in fine svyle, and cantered away ahead, taking r l enext gorse and the second water like a good hunter ; but he refused at the next made gorse-t.opped fence. Slieelian put him at it a sscoud time and he negotiated it easilv. From thence ho did not make a mistake, took all his jumps at an easy canter, and won easily by a mile, Aft era .rood deal of fiddling, Billy Button at last got- over the first- jump, and stained away in chase of Silver-st roam, but although he managed, after baulking sever,■ il times, to get. round the course, he ran a long way behind Silverstream. None of the other horses got further than the second waterjump, while some of them failed to get over the first water. The race was thus a hollow victory fir Silverstream. Waitaki CoU-v iv Cue, a Handicap Steeplechase of SO sovs.; about 3 miles, over such country as the Stewards may appoint. Nomination, 2 sovs.; Acceptance. 2 so vs., with a Sweep of 5 sovs., to go to tho aecond hor.-o. The Ai'out. 4vrs., 12st. Tibs. (P. Rl'O-y) 1 Stockman, aged, MM. 12lbs. (A. Lyford) ... ... ... ... 2 Betting : 5 to 4- against The Agent, 5 to 2 Shillelagh. 3 to 1 Ivanhoe, 5 to 1 Slockman it'id Jack. Ivanhoe, Shillelagh, and Jack, also ran. Tommy was scratched. The Cup was again a verylK.Mow affair, the water-jumps proving a killer to the race. At the lU'-st the whole of the horses baulked. The Agent being the first to get off; followed in a stylo by the others. !At the second water-jump, every horse [ baulked several times. The Agent was, eventually, induced to take the jump, j and eamo in a winner, whi'e the ! others were struggling to get, over the jump. The whole of the horses were kept at the water for nearly half an hour without anything.being done beyond continual baulks. Eventually SAtookman and Jack were got over, Stockman coming in second, within half a minute of half an hour after The Agent, closely followed by Jack,. '
