A mooting was held last evening at the Royal Hotel, Otepopo, for the purpose of taking united action to display in a public manner the very high estimation in which .Mr. "William Craig is held by the residents in the districts, prior to his departure for the North. The meeting was largely attended, and Mr. Henderson occupied the chair. It was decided to entertain Mr. Craig at a complimentary dinner at the Royal Hotel on Wednesday evening, 31st instant, at seven o'clock, and the price of tickets was fixed at 10s. b'd. A Committee was formed to carry out the necessary arrangements, Mr. A. Firie acting as secretary. Mr. Sumpter's Committee and Supporters will meet in his office this evening, in order to make final arrangements for Monday's contest. Some time ago a complaint was lodged with the Commissioner of Telegraphs by a resident of Otepopo against Mr. Stanton, Postmaster and Telegraphist at that township. Nobody but the person complaining see.ns to be aware of the exact nature of the complaint, but hearing that it was made, and fearing that an injustice might be clone to a worthy public servant, the residents of Otepopo. cf cour=e excepting the dissatisfied party, forwarded a letter to the Commissioner of Telegraphs, testifying to the ability, assiduity, and .-.ttentiveness of Mr. Stanton, to which tlic following satisfactory reply has been received :—" Wellington, July 10, IS7S. —Gentlemen, —I am directed by the Hon. the Telegraph Commissioner to acknowledge the receipt of your letter, expressing your entire satisfaction at the manner in which Mr. Stanton, the officer in charge at Herbert, has performed his duties. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, T. W. Parker, Ksq., R. M., delivered judgment in the ease of Anderson v. the Queen —a claim for L2O Is Gd for wages due. and for wrongful dismissal. The plaintiff had been employed on the railway at the Breakwater, and was one of those who made a claim for overtime. This being refused, iie declined to work after o o'clock, and he was therefore dismissed from the service. He then brought an action to recover the amount of wanes due to him, including overtime, and damages for wrongful dismissal. Tiie case was heard about two months ago, but judgment was deferred, pending the ivcoipt of tlie regular report of the decision in a similar case heard in Dunedin—Collins I v. the Otago Harbor Board—in which the J workman was non-suited.
