PETITION FOR RAILWAY PLATFORM AT UXBRIDGE

«> ■—— The following is a copy of a, petition now in course of signature, and intended for presentation to the Minister for Public Works. There can be no question as to the reasonableness of the request of the settlers in and around Uxbridge, and ->s they are not asking for a very great deal, we think they may reckon upon meeting with success : "To the Hon. the Minister for Public Works "We, the undersigned, settlers residing near Uxbridge, in the A wamoko District, in the Provincial District of Otago, desire to lay before you the fact that we have at present no facilities for loading our produce for transport by rail to market. The settlers resident in the vicinity of Uxbridge have hitherto been necessitated to load the railway trucks without any of the ordinary appliances, and have often been compelled to leave their grain exposed to the weather for several days at a time, until it was convenient for the Eailway Department to convey it to Oamaru. These circumstances have occasioned both loss of time and money. When you are made aware of the fact that 3000 tons of grain will, at the lowest computation, be raised within a radius of three miles of Uxbridge this season, in addition to a quantity of wool and other produce, which will show a considerable increase in the returns of last year, and of the loss consequent upon the absence of any facilities for jonveying the same to the railway trucks tor transport to market, and for receiving the fencing materials, fuel, stores, &c, imported into our district, we are led to relieve that you will see the neoessity of icceding to our request to be provided with ;he facilities for transport enjoyed by other

places. We are, therefore, encouraged to' respectfully re(p.:-t that you will cause to be erected a i>: . Si -\<\ and shed at TJxbridge in o:- 1.-r o Htvi! us the loss now occasioned by d:.''.i}% additional labor, and damage to our produce."
