In t!:o Supreme Court to-day, a man named Rankin sued the Norwich Union Insurance Company for LIOO, being unpaid balance on a tire insurance policy in 1877. Rankin insured a house for LSOO with the Cimpany in 1577. The house was burnt down, when the Company refused to pay more than L4OO, on the ground that that was the full value of the house. After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff for the full amount, with interest and costs. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, Timothy Houlahan. an elderly man, was committed for trial for a rape on a girl under eight years of age. Several more cases against persons keeping kerosene without branding the same as dangerous, were heard and dismissed with cautions. AUCKLAND. July 15. In the Police Court to-day, Crowe, charged with maliciously assaulting Harry Brome, a prize-fighter, with a billhook in a brothel, was remanded for a week. Brome : s recovery -is expected, unless erysipelas supervenes. Crowe has previously been convicted 15 times for drunkenness, larceny, and other offences. A lire at Newton, this morning, destroyed a large dwelling-house in Dublinstreet-, occupied by two married couples named Gadding and Harrison, the properly of John Jeffrey. Several adjoining buildings were greatly endangered, but the iire was prevented from spreading by the elforta of the Newton and Auckland brigades. The occupants escaped with their lives. No furniture was saved. The building was insured in the South British forLl2s. WAITARA. Julv in. On Saturday night, about 'SO AVaikato natives, who had been drinking--during the day, attempted to pull down and burn the Waitara Hotel. The constable called upon the Europeans to assist in arresting' the ringleaders, when a serious row took place. No one was much hurt, although blood wa= flowing freely. The ringleaders were eventually lodged in gaol, but owin<i to the threats of the natives and an attempted rescue of the prisoners, the} 7 were released by order of Mr. Thomas Baylor, J, P. The affair caused great e?:eireiiient. The Police Department are t" blame for not having a projjer stall' located here.
