The monthly meeting of the Committee of the Mechanics' Institute was held last evening, when the following member? were present :—Messrs. Sumpter (President, in the chair), Hislop, Filleul, Sprat)-,, Kidd, Tempest, M'Combe; =crnd Davies(Hon. See.) The sub-committee aTjpointed to draw- up a list of new books submitted the list prepared by them, and a letter was read from Mr. Fitzgerald, enclosing publishers. Mr. Hislop' stated that L9O of the money required for the purchase of the books had been guaranteed by three' or four gentlemen to whom he had spoken. The following resolution was carried :—•" (1.) That books to the value, of, or not exceeding, L2OU be ordered as per'' catalogue recommended by the sub-com-mittee, and that the Book Committee be requested to write tn the Education Board accordingly. (2.) That Mr. Fitzgerald's letter be ack'.unvledg-.-d with thanks, and that he be. informed that the Committee -have, re' solved as above ; the books to be ordered tlirough the Education- Board. On the motion of Mr. Jb'iileui, seconded by Mr. Spratt, it was decided to request lhe representatives for the district to got the borrowing powers' of the Institute extended to L3OOO. The resignation of Mr. Blackburne was accepted, with an expression of regret at his departure, and the .secretary was instructed to write asking him to obtain free copies of the Wellington papers for the use of the Institute'.
