We have to-day made inquiries with it-f'-rence to the apparent misunderstanding which seeni« to exist between the promoters ■ of the coucerr. In aid of the new parsonage site for '»t. Luke's Church and the Oamaru Christys with reference to the engagement of the Masonic Hall for the 9fch July. We learn that the hall was engaged by the Committee entrusted with the getting up of the concert in aid of St. Luke's Parsonage prior ■ to the date of the Christys enterta! iwi'being made known, and the letter received by them from Mr. Booth was merely written for the purpose of preventing the possibi! : .ty of the two entertainments clashing, Tr» St Luke's Committee were, we la.irn, willing to waive their right to the hall should 1 the Christys be desrms of holding their " performance on that date, and are willing to 1 do so even now. But after the explanation > which we have given there will be no necesi sity for such a course being adopted, as the - Christy's will see that there wa3 no desiru j on the part of St. Luke's Concert Commit- > tee to forestall them in any way. The j matter was one which only required exi planation to be rendered satisfactory to both . parties. A special meeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Mainland, Headland, Spence, Procter, and the Engineer (Mr. M'Leod). The meetin was called for the purpose of considering a niemorand'un from in-j Ed'.-'ii'-t with J ;•■: i-'.'uci' to the purchase of pipes for the : ''Va.envv!:s. A young *• .;■. numed James Han-is was charged on remand with having embezzled several small sums of money belonging to his former employ >.-i', Mr. lloberi Smart. Evidence having been taken in support of the several charge", proving that accusrd had received th-.-several amounts and had not accounted for them, the cise was adjourned until 3 p.m., in order to afford prisoner an opportunity of calling witnesses as to character. As will be seen by a reference to onr advertising columns, Professor Stanieh, the Palestinian Aurist, intends paying another visit to Oamaru. He will arrive here on .Friday, and remain for one day only. The OamiiTU Christy's held their reguiii practice last evening in the Masonic Hall There was an excellent muster, twelve m-jm bers being present, and the programme w.; gone through with great spirit. A -ufo;!:;. was afterwards held, when a letier was rea< fi'nm the Secretary to the Hospital Com mittee, accepting with thanks the Christy' offer of an entertainment in aid of the fund of that institution. A letter was also reai from Mr. J. Booth, on behalf of a sub-com mittee of the St. Luke's Vestry, stating tha it was intended to give a concert in aid o funds for the new parsonage site, and tha the Masonic Hall had been engaged for th 9th July for that purpose.. The writer in conclusion, asked that the Christys migh postpone their entertainment for a shorl time, in order that the two entertainment might nod clash. Some little discussioi took place upon the subject, several mem bers expressing themselves rather warml] with regard to the manner in whicl the ball had been engaged befor< the Christy's had had an opportunity t( consider tiic letter. At the same time the} agreed that it was desirable, as a matter o; courtesy, to postpone the concert in aid oi th>; Ho'-pial until the 15th July, which was .igrecd to, aud the Secretary w.ts imrrvcted t<> iutimat-j the same to Mr. Bouth and the Ho3pitd %'nninii'tec.
