SPECIAL CABLEGRAM.
(from our own correspondent.) Dunedin, May 20. The following special cablegram has been received by the Star : London, May 27.
The war excitement is subsiding. The Government states that the prospects of the Conference have materially improved.
The Australian cricketers have defeated the Maryiebone Club with nine wickets to spare. The Maryiebone Club made 43 in their first innings and 19 in the second, and the Australians made 41 in their first innings. Spofforth took eleven wickets for 20 runs. The excitement was the greatest that has ever been known on any playing ground at Home. The resultwas received with astonishment all over the kingdom.
Melbourne, May Difficulties are surrounding the Berry party, and their popularity is waning. Sydney, May 28.
It is stated that the Governor, Sir Hercules Robinson, has been offered the Governorship of either Madras or the Capo of Good Hope. Flour has fallen ss.
