At tFie meeting of the Harbor Board todav, Mr. Shrimski drew attention to the fa.:t that the contractors for the Harbor works at present in coarse •>( construction, had greatly exceeded their contract time, ft was pointed out that the contractors had b'-.'n greatly detained for want of cement, and by being given other works to perform at the harbor. It was decided to direct the Engineer to draw the attention of the contractors to the fact that they had greatly exceeded the time v.i.hin which the works .-hould have been completed. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, thi.-. morning, before T. W. Parker, Fwp, K.M., John Ctirrie was tiued 1/2 for allowing a horse to winder on the railway line near ihe bridge, and Septimus Wood, for permitting a chimney to be -n tire, was cautioned and discharged. Frank Pogson was again brought rip on the charge of pa.--.-ing valueless cheques, and further remaiiJed until Thursday next. To-morrow being a Post-office holiday, mails for despatch mi that date will close at S p.m. this evening. The members of the Karly-C!o.;i::g Association met list at tie V* e:u--:-ir....:t Halt. It was resolved that the Committee take steps to hold a public meeting at an early date. Messrs Ferricr and Dick were appointed members oi the Commitee in the stead of two others who had resigned, and three new members of the Association wore enrolled. Mr. John Edward Denniston, the wellknown solicitor, and a person named David Miller, treated the people of Haitray-street to a display of pugilistic science on the 21st inst. Mr. Denniston was one of the counsel in a case heard last week in the lI.M. Court. Dnnedin, in which Miller, one of the parties in tiie case came oil" second best. Miller met Denniston in Kattray-stroet, and said, " That is a pretty trick you served us la3t week." Mor; hot words ensued, and Miller struck Denniston on the shoulder with a piece of lath. Denniston dropped his (-amp from one hand and his satchel ft;!! of legal wisdom from the other, and treated Miller to some argument with his list, iiitongue having become fatigued. Ultimately both gentlernor: rolled in loving embrace on the ground, and we can imagine how the cloth would get soiled in the scrimmage that appears to have occurred. The total provincial increase is 50.1)00 acres ; incre.-sed yield of wheat, 40.1HH) bushels general total, 120.1 Mil) bushels, or more than one-third over the I . stiraate.— Dr. Hartman died somewhat suddenly this morning.
The monthly meeting of the Young Men's' Christian Association took place last evening at the Association's rooms. Mr. C. G. Moore (President) occupied the chair. "Weekly meetings for Biblical instruction were instituted, the iirst to take place on the 29th inst., and it was decided to post upon a hoard in the Association's rooms information regarding religious services that may be held from time to time in Oamaru.
The Hampden Rifles were inspected yesterday by Sergeant-Major MTherson, who expresses himself as highly pleased with the maimer in which they performed the various evolutions through which they were put, • ne of which was firing a fau-df-jok.
