OPENING OF THE SOUTHERN LINE TO PALMERSTON.
[>. v on: .srnciAL repouter.] Palmeustox, May 21. A special left Oamaru this morning, at 12 o'clock, for Palmerstoii, for the purpose of taking over the line from the contractors, so as to open tho traffic I between Hillgrove and Palmcrston. It I arrived at Hillurove at 1.15, and proceeded along thj newly-formed section at a good pace, but the road was rather rouL.' I ', as was only to be expected on a new line. The time taken to run through from O.maru was two hours, indnding four stoppages. It could easily bo done in an honr and a half, if the train ran through without stoppages. Strange to sa.v, tho arrival of the iirsc train through i'aiinerston has created no excitement Here, and there wore ;;o persons at the station to meet the train. Amongst those who formed the party were- -Messrs. Slirimsld, M.H.E., Lowe (Resident- Engineer), Back (Acting-Traiiic Manager), JJurnett, Smith, Luring and Kerr. Regu- j lar trains will run to-morrow to Oamaru. |
