SUBSIDIES TO HOSPITALS ETC.,
.—— _ It appears that the strong representations made by the Municipal Council with reference to the deductions made from the municipal subsidies for the purposes of subsidising hospitals and charitable institutions, lias had the desired effect. The ministry has apparently seen the injustice of deducting money from the Oamaru Corporation for the purpose of subsidising institutions from which the town derives no benefit whatever. The following letter from the Under-Secretary was read at the meeting of the Council held last evening. Colonial Secretary's Office. Wellington, New Zealand, April] Gtb, IS~S. Sir—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of April 4th, in reply to the proposals of the Government for the maintenance of hospitals and charitable institutions.
I am directed to inform your Worsmp that under the circumstances you describe, the Government will, as from the Ist January, 187S, return the deductions wliich the law compels thorn to make from subsidies payable to the Borough of Oamara and the County-of TVaitaki, on account of the vote fur charitable aid, as explained in the letters which you quote. —I have, &c., Ck S. CoorEß. His Worship the Mayor, Oamaru.
