Dr. Somervillc held a service at the Theatre Royal yesterday. The building was crammed.
A new corner!j' and burlesque company, under the management of Mr. Boskins, opened at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night. Sir John Coode visits Lake Ellesmere tn-d'ay, to inspect the operations for the drainage of the lake. Though the Lyttelton Harbor Board declined his services when ottered by the Government, Sir J. Coode made a cursory examination of the Lyttolton hfivlmr works. Mr. John Anderson, of the Canterbury Foundry, says that L 15,000 will not cover his loss by the destruction of patterns and models at the late fire. They have been accumulating for the past twentyone vears.

April 10. Duncan's bakery was totally destroyed by fire last night. The origin of the fire is not known. The property was insured in the Norwich Union for L.200, find the stock and furniture in the South British for L3OO.
William Cooper's house at the Whatatutu run lias been burnt to the ground. The library, and furniture valued at LIOOO, were destroyed. The total loss is estimated at L3OQQ. There was no insurance as the policy had just lapsed. The messenger was coming into town at the time of the fire to renew his insurance, but arrived too late. «■ LAWRENCE. April 16. There were sixty applications yesterday to the Survey Office for land under agricultural lease in Tuapeka West, Table Hill, and Waitahuna East districts ; also a number of applications for land under the deferred payment system in the same neighborhood. The whole of the day the office was besieged by applicants. At the inquiry into the origin of the fire at Monaghan's shop, a verdict was returned that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. Steps are being taken to re-form the Fire Brigade, which wad disbanded a few months ago..

The returns of the populations of the country districts in the Westland and Grey Counties are not yet completed.
