[per press agency.] ■ ♦ WELLINGTON. April 7. The meeting between Sir George Grey and the Maori King will be held on the 16th inst., at Hauraki. Several tons of flour have gone up. The meeting is expected to be large and important. Mr. Crawford, .R.M., has demanded from the Government that an inquiry be made into the charges made by Mr. G. E. Barton against the officials of the R.M. Court. Tbe application was sent in yesterday. The chess match, by telegraph, between the Christchurch and Dunedin Clubs, commenced last night, but though play was carried on for four hours there was very little done beyond opening the various games. So far Dunedin has the attack in the majority of games, and thus has slightly the best of it. The match will be resumed on Saturday next. . «■ AUCKLAND. April 7. Sir George Grey has returned from Kawau revived in health. He and Mr. Sheehau visit Hamilton and Te Awamutu on Monday, and return to Auckland on Wednesday without visiting the King Country. The Governor with Commodore Hoskins goes to Tauranga and the Lakes on Monday. The following have been elected Grammar School Governors, viz., Messrs. D. L. Murdoch, O'Rorke, and Hall. April 8. Alfred Porter's house narrowly escaped destruction by fire this morning, through the servant placing a box of hot ashes near an outbuilding. Sir George Grey and the Hon. J. Sheehau proceed to Waikato to-morrow, and will be entertained at a banquet at Hamilton. Colonel Whitmore goes to Wellington by the Taranaki, and will be replaced by Mr. Fisher, Five boys bolted from the Training School on Saturday. The Governor, with the Commodore, went to Tauranga to-day in the Wolverine, They will visit the lake country. * TAURANGA. April 6. The census returns show European population to be 2,944 ; acres under grass and crops, 17,«20. Over 9,000 bushels of wheat have been grown at Tauranga this season. . « CHRISTCHURCH. April S. lii reply to an inquiry the Lyttelton Harbor Board has received a telegram from the Government to the effect that no warning has been received from Homo to protect the Harbors of the colony. A man named O'Leary reported to the police yesterday that he was garrotted early on Sunday morning, and robbed of about LlO. At about 2 o'clock on Sunday morning, a cab driver was stuck up near the River Styx on the north road by two men, biit by giving his horse a vigorous cut with his whip he managed to escape. Russell has another letter in the Evening Star to-night, as follows :—"Despite the telegram sent by Father Hennebery to the Press Agency saying that he did not denounce mixed and legal marriages at all, permit me to say that I stand to all the statements made in the second paragraph of my previous letter. He can deny them if he likes. His threats about perjury and libel are beneath notioe." KUMARA.

April 6. In the telegram re Father Hennebery, with reference to his letter threatening Mr. Brown, the word, "police" should read " law officers." IjSTYERCARGILL. April 6. Sir John Coode inspected the New River Harbour, and, without expressing any opinion one way or another, said he presumed the chief object at present was to do away with the shoal water in the vicinity of the jetty. He left per rail en route for Dunedin this forenoon, having on the score of duty abandoned his intention of taking' a trip to the Lakes at Wakatipn.
