The Evening Mail. FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1878.
The residents of this port K.it »t the Colony will lead with pleasure the announcement that some steps are being j taken in regard to the Dmitroon-Haka-teramea Railway. Whether the preliminaries mentioned m the following quotation from the report of the proceedings at a meeting of the. Waste Lauds Board will end in the wm-lt being undertaken is a matter that rests with t!ie residents of the districts that would be benefited thereby. The quotation says : "The Under-Secretary for Crown Laiins transmitted a tracing of land r.i be reserved f->r the Dunrr.>..!i and iiakateraniiei Railway- The O'aief Commissioner was requested to have tiie lan-i hi question temporarily mark.d off f..r ihe purposes want.d." Tins ready In-ks U.;e j business, and it is to be hop..! thar toe, survey will bo made, and ;ii« worw pro- = ceedeil with witiioiu delay. Judical matters delays are dangerous. More; especially is the present moment aj favourable one for carrying ihroitg.i successfully such a work. The present Government seems inclined to facilitate the carrying out of reproductive public works by everv means in its power. It _i* scarcelv likelv that the Gisr.v party will be superseded by the miamous, seven years' hotch-potch Government that received their quietus last session ; but it is just as well not only to waite no tune, but to bring into requisition ail necessary means at our disposal to secure the construction of cW.rable railway works now. Under the District Railways Act a network of lines could be constructed to the interior that would be productive of incalculable benefit to a large portion of the Colonv. But the initiative must be taken by the Waitaki County Council, with the co-operation of other similar bodies interested in such works. There is no reason whatever why the DniitroonHaka'ieramua Railway should not be commenced immediately the survey is completed, which the Government has promised shall be proceeded with immediately.
