The Government have received a cora- • Miinication from London stating that the 4i pur cent, loan has reached the highest quotation it has ever attained. Macandrew and Ballance.

CHRISTCHURCH. March 10. A verdict of "Found drowned" was returned by the jury in the case of the girl Owens. Sir George Grey has been busy receiving deputations all day long. March 18.

Francis Cassidy, aged 21, was drowned while bathing in the Waimakariri river yesterday. The first deposit of LlO aside has been made in a walking match for fifty miles between Bowley and Pentecost. The Premier visits Kaiapoi to-day to attend a public meeting to night by request.

His Excellency the Governor is expected here about Friday to f innaliy open the new County road to Oliinumnri. The local bodies are preparing to receive him. It is probable that a citizens ball or banquet will take place. The Maoris will take a prominent part in the reception.

JNVERCARGILL. March 16,

A meeting of the promoters of the eompam" to be formed under " The District Railways Act" to construct a line from Otatautau branching to the Nightcap coa' measures on the way to the Waiho Valley, took place this afternoon. It was resolved to apply to the Waste Lands Board for a prospecting site on the Government, reserve at the Nightcap. A Committee was appointed to inspect the reserve, and determine the best boundaries for a mining lease. A Committee was also appointed to advise whoever might be appointed Engineer as to the best route for the line to take. The meeting was a numerous and influential one. The Bank of New Zealand were chosen bankers, and Messrs. M'Donald and Russell solicitors. L 175 was subscribed to defray' the preliminary expenses of forming the Company and surveying the railway route.

AUCKLAND. March 16. The buildings completely destroyed by the fire last night are Seiner's brewery, office, and outhouses ; Watts' five-roomed dwelling-house : and Taylor's boot and siioe shop. Tlje brewery cost L 2,800, and the plant L 1,500 ; Mrs. Sutton's house cost L 250. The following are the insurances : Norwich Union—on the brewery L 875, on the plant and stock L4OO-total, L 1,275 : New Zealand—on the stock and plant LSOO, on Watts' house Ll5O, on Taylor's house Ll5O total, LBOO ; National—on the brewery L6OO-Grand Total, L 2,675.
