SIR GEORGE GREY AT INVERCARGILL.
♦ Invekuauuill, March 7. Several deputations waited on Sir Jeorge Grey to-day one of merchants and mporters relative to the bonus on rabbit ikins. It was pointed out how tho LSOO >ti the estimates was miserably insufficient .o meet the claims already established, -.nd that the Act distinctly provides for a alfpenny per skin. Sir George Grey •omised to consider t'>e question. A putation from the Bluff Harbour Board o waited on him about Sir John Coode'a it. Sir George Grey said that Sir John )de has been engaged for a large sum
by the Australian Government, and if New Zealand desired to benefit by his advice it would have to pay pro rata. He thought that the cost to the Colony would not exceed L 1,500, or about L3OO each for the harbours to be inspected. He also thought that it ought to be made a colonial question ; in that case the Assembly would pass the amount, but if not the various harbours would be responsible A deputation from Winton re the two proposed branch lines to the Nightcap coal reserves, one from Winton to Otautau. The deputation presented a requisition, which Sir George Grey promised to consider with his colleagues. A deputation from the Invercargifl Town Council about sundry local matters, notably one re water supply. Sir George Grey promised to send one of the Government engineers to advise with the Council, conditional on his expenses being paid.
